Summer 2019 Hiking and Knitting Retreat with Julie Hoover
SOLD OUT - please do contact us to be put on our wait list!
We are thrilled to announce our second hiking and knitting retreat high in the Colorado Rockies among rugged mountain vistas and glorious summer wildflowers. Our trip takes us to the Shrine Mountain Huts, part of the famous 10th Mountain Division Hut System.
This year we are so are excited to have Julie Hoover join us to take our sweater knitting to the next level, in A Sweater Master Class! Julie will share with us her best practices of sweater designing and knitting. Including but not limited to gauge swatching, cast on and bind off methods, selvedge edges and shaping techniques. This hands on clinic will be sure to leave with tips, tricks and techniques to make professional looking garments. When class is not in session you will have the opportunity to kick back, share stories, enjoy great food and peaceful surroundings, and keep our needles moving. And if you need help with a technique or have a question about one of her patterns, just ask. She will be with us in a very intimate setting of just twelve knitters.
For those coming from afar, the retreat begins with your comfortable stay at the Inn at Riverwalk in Edwards, Colorado Tuesday, July 16th. Dinner that evening and breakfast on Wednesday morning are on your own -- there are many fun, delicious restaurants within very easy walking distance. We will gather at the Inn at 10AM on Wednesday morning, which is when our local guests will join us. From here, we will drive up to the top of Vail Pass, where we will depart on a leisurely 2.7 mile hike to the hut. Llamas will hike with us, carrying most of our gear! We'll enjoy a well-earned lunch at the hut while we acclimate and relax.
That afternoon we will start our Sweater Master Class Workshop with Julie.
Recognized for her minimal aesthetic and attention to fine detail, Julie focuses on designing knitwear that is simultaneously causal and elegant—a signature style that has developed over the years in her work as a visual merchandiser, art director and freelance designer. Julie has a BA in clothing & textiles and spends her time designing for her own label, as well as other well-known brands.
Based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, her free time is spent in the kitchen, behind the camera, with a book in her hand, as a mom to three boys (and an Italian Greyhound), or planning the next travel adventure. Follow her as @juliehoover_design on Instagram, Julie Hoover Design on Facebook, and at juliehoover.com. We are so fortunate to have her join us on our retreat to work with all of us.
Wednesday evening is for exploring, relaxing, eating a home-cooked dinner, a sauna if you choose, and enjoying each other's company around the campfire. With a clear night, star gazing will be a highlight!
Thursday we'll wake up to a yummy breakfast, then head out on a hike on Shrine Pass through wildflowers and incredible high mountain vistas. We plan to hike 3-4 miles and we will eat a picnic lunch on the trail.
When we arrive back to the huts we will complete the second half of our Sweater Master Class workshop with Julie. Again, we'll spend the evening knitting, dining at the hut, and relaxing around the campfire.
Friday we wake up to another tasty breakfast, then pack to head down the trail to our ride back to Edwards. We will arrive back at the Inn by 1PM. Lunch is on your own, and the afternoon is free to rest, relax by the pool, explore, or shop at Riverwalk's many boutiques. We will meet to celebrate at 5PM at Maker+Stitch, then dinner is on your own. For locals, this is where the retreat ends. For visitors, you have lodging at the Inn Friday night so there is no rush to depart Friday afternoon!
Important: For those traveling from afar, we are asking that everyone fly in by Tuesday, July 16th to acclimate to the altitude. Edwards is at 7200 feet and the hut is over 10,000 feet above sea level. To get here, you will fly into Denver or Eagle and either rent a car or take a Colorado Mountain Express van. It is not a difficult drive but we are two hours and 15 minutes from the Denver airport. We will have rooms blocked for you at the Inn at Riverwalk in Edwards Tuesday and Friday nights.
Please feel free to contact us at email@example.com with any questions! We are excited to hike, knit, and learn the best cabling techniques with you!
3 variants are listed: one without Tuesday or Friday lodging, one with double occupancy Tuesday and Friday nights, and one with single occupancy Tuesday and Friday nights.
Accommodations at the Inn at Riverwalk are double occupancy. Please indicate single occupancy for the Inn at Riverwalk (with an added charge) if you desire.
Accommodations at Jay's Cabin are double and communal occupancy. If you are not comfortable sleeping in a room with others, this retreat may not be for you. The hut does have hot and cold running water, two indoor bathrooms with flush toilets, one with shower, one with bathtub. There is running, potable water at the cabin. There is a communal, wood-fired sauna located between Jay's Cabin and Chuck's Cabin.
More details about what to bring will be available after registration (by mid-March).
