Summer 2022 Hiking and Knitting Retreat with Mary Anne Benedetto
Email us to join our WAIT LIST!
Tuesday July 12 - Friday July 15, 2022.
We are finally holding our next retreat! Welcome to our third hiking and knitting retreat high in the Colorado Rockies among rugged mountain vistas and glorious summer wildflowers. Our trip takes us to the Shrine Mountain Huts, part of the famous 10th Mountain Division Hut System.
This year we are thrilled to have Mary Anne Benedetto of Apriori Knits join us to teach two workshops specific to a sweater pattern she has designed especially for our Maker+Stitch retreat. The classes will include a cabling technique session and a session on methods to fit your sweater to your body. We're especially excited that Mary Anne will design our retreat sweater using Hudson + West yarn, our favorite new 100% American wool. When class is not in session you will have the opportunity to kick back, share stories, enjoy great food, relax or walk in the peaceful surroundings, and keep your needles moving.
Mary Anne is a New York based knitter and designer. Her Apriori Knits builds on her lifetime love for, and fascination with knitting. She now inspire others through teaching and through her line of patterns that reflects her aesthetic for fun and functional knits. Her designs take cues from current trends, while also aspiring to create timeless pieces that will be treasured for years to come.
From Apriori's website: "A priori is Latin for 'from what comes before.' It is an homage to all the amazing knitters and designers that have laid the path for me in my knitting journey. I hope in some small way to help continue, and play the tradition forward to new generations of knitters."
For those coming from afar, the retreat begins with your comfortable stay at the Inn at Riverwalk in Edwards, Colorado Tuesday, July 12th. Dinner that evening and breakfast on Wednesday morning are on your own -- there are many fun, delicious restaurants within very easy walking distance. We will gather at the Inn at 10AM on Wednesday morning, which is when our local guests will join us. From here, we will drive up to the top of Vail Pass, where we will depart on a leisurely 2.7 mile hike to the hut. Llamas will hike with us, carrying most of our gear! We'll enjoy a well-earned lunch at the hut while we acclimate and relax.
That afternoon we will hold our Cabling Class with Mary Anne.
Wednesday evening is for exploring, relaxing, eating a home-cooked dinner, a sauna if you choose, and enjoying each other's company around the campfire. With a clear night, star gazing will be a highlight!
Thursday we'll wake up to a yummy breakfast, then head out on a hike on Shrine Pass through wildflowers and incredible high mountain vistas. We plan to hike 3-4 miles and we will eat a picnic lunch on the trail.
When we arrive back to the huts. Mary Anne will teach us her best techniques for fitting your sweater to your body. Again, we'll spend the evening knitting, dining at the hut, and relaxing around the campfire.
Friday we wake up to another tasty breakfast, then pack to head down the trail to our ride back to Edwards. We will arrive back at the Inn by 1PM. Lunch is on your own, and the afternoon is free to rest, relax by the pool, explore, or shop at Riverwalk's many boutiques. We will meet to celebrate at 5PM at Maker+Stitch, then dinner is on your own. For locals, this is where the retreat ends. For visitors, you have lodging at the Inn Friday night so there is no rush to depart Friday afternoon!
Important: Attendees must be vaccinated for Covid and have no Covid symptoms. For those traveling from afar, we are asking that everyone fly in by Tuesday, July 12th to acclimate to the altitude. Edwards is at 7200 feet and the hut is over 10,000 feet above sea level. To get here, you will fly into Denver or Eagle and either rent a car or take a Colorado Mountain Express van. It is not a difficult drive but we are two hours and 15 minutes from the Denver airport. We will have rooms blocked for you at the Inn at Riverwalk in Edwards the nights of Tuesday July 12th and Friday July 15th.
Please feel free to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions! We are excited to hike, knit, and learn the best cabling techniques with you!
Three retreat variants are listed: one without Tuesday or Friday lodging, one with double occupancy Tuesday night the 12th and Friday night the 15th, and one with single occupancy Tuesday and Friday nights.
Accommodations at the Inn at Riverwalk are double occupancy. Please indicate single occupancy for the Inn at Riverwalk (with an added charge) if you desire.
Accommodations at Jay's Cabin are double and communal occupancy. If you are not comfortable sleeping in a room with others, this retreat may not be for you. The hut does have hot and cold running water, two indoor bathrooms with flush toilets, one with shower, one with bathtub. There is running, potable water at the cabin. There is a communal, wood-fired sauna located between Jay's Cabin and Chuck's Cabin.
