Knitted Kalevala II
Knitted Kalevala II follows in the footsteps of Jenna Kostet’s first knitting book, an international bestseller published in 2022. Continuing her journey into the world of mythology, tradition and stories, this sequel promises to captivate knitters and folklore enthusiasts alike.
This book contains 20 colourwork patterns inspired by poems from the Kalevala, which is considered a national epic in Finland. From sweaters and cardigans to cosy accessories, this collection offers a diverse array of designs, showcasing various shapes and constructions. The stories the poems tell come to life in colourwork featured at the yoke, hem or sleeves — all worked using only two colours at a time.
“Most knitters would agree that crafting increases your happiness. Even if we aren’t rune singers, we are still part of an endless chain of tradition.” – Jenna Kostet
The Kalevala is the result of Elias Lönnrot compiling, collecting, arranging and adapting folk poetry and writing some lines himself. The first version, the “Old Kalevala” was published in 1835.
The first Knitted Kalevala examined fifteen different poems from the Kalevala, alongside knitting patterns based on them. For this book, nineteen poems were selected for designs and background notes.
In both books, the debut book and this sequel, Jenna Kostet examines the Kalevala through colorwork knitting.
Jenna Kostet is a writer and a knitwear designer known for enchanting patterns, as well as a published author of numerous historical novels and children’s books in Finland.
